The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris, a review by RantingLunatic
I had a hard time getting into this, I would describe it as a “slow-burn narrative.” I would have to say it did not truly grab me until 75-80% into the book. The prologue was ominous, with no names, just a narrative with the date. It still didn’t pique my interest until much later on. I was completely on board with the microaggressions in the workplace and marginalization of women and minorities, but I was still treading water halfway through. It was so slow-moving that I was struggling to keep up with the cultural references and obvious social commentary. I felt like the characters needed more detailed backstories than they did. Honestly, if I could have taken the 70 to 95% part of the novel for 100% of it, I would have loved it over the moon. I was completely dissatisfied with the ending.
